Get Your Workout On with Orangetheory

Orangetheory is opening its doors in September and we couldn’t be more excited to have them join the River District community. You may have heard other people rave about Orangetheory and wondered what the hype is about. So, we talked to Dave and Stephen, the owners of Orangetheory River District, to learn more!

What is the Orangetheory workout?

Orangetheory Fitness is a 1-hour full body group workout, focusing on heart rate-based training. Our coaches guide and support you through the workout, and we use technology to track your heart rate throughout.

During the class, we take your heart rate into what we call “The Orange Zone”, which is a target heart rate of at least 84% of your maximum heart rate. If you are able to keep your heart rate above that threshold for 12-20 minutes in a workout, it’s scientifically proven that you will continue to burn calories up to 36 hours after your workout.

What does a sample workout look like?

Our workouts are all unique and never done twice. By using a variety of equipment, we focus on building endurance, strength, power, or a combination of the three. The group is split between our equipment and we do different exercises all through the hour. We use treadmills, water rowers, dumbbells, TRX, ab dolly, bosu balls, medicine balls, mini bands, in addition to bodyweight exercises.

What sets Orangetheory apart from other group fitness classes or working out individually at the gym?

All our classes are led by coaches who are provincially or nationally certified, in addition to having their Orangetheory Fit Certification. Not only are they there to motivate you during the workout, but they are there to monitor, guide, assess, and offer modifications to exercises based on your abilities and fitness levels. We have a wide range of members from Olympic athletes to those starting their fitness journeys, and having a coach really helps you achieve your individual goals.

Everyone that comes to our classes keeps coming back, not just for the workout, but for that feeling of community. We always support one another during our workouts and having a community helps keep you accountable and on track to reaching your fitness goals. Plus, it’s a really great way to meet new people or get to know your neighbours!

What can someone expect on their first day at the studio?

You’ll be welcomed with a big smile from our staff and an energetic environment to work out in. Prior to the class, a member of our team will give you an introduction to all the equipment we use. They will also help you get set up with a heart-rate monitor for the class. After a fun and dynamic workout, you’ll spend some time with the coach who walks you through specific results on TV monitors throughout the studio.

What are the membership options you offer?

We offer monthly memberships and class packs for drop-in classes. Our membership agreements can be canceled anytime with 30 days’ notice.

We offer class packs of 10, 20, or 30 classes, and 3 levels of membership:

  • Premier – unlimited classes every month
  • Elite – 8 classes every month
  • Basic – 4 classes every month

Right now, Orangetheory River District is offering reservations for their Presales Founding Member rates for a limited time. By reserving, you’ll receive the lowest rates once they open, as well as free VIP classes to try before they open to the general public.
