The River District Orangetheory studio officially opened this week! If you don’t know, Orangetheory is a 1-hour full body workout that focuses on heart-rate training to help you stay active and to reach your fitness goals (read more about it here).
We asked Dave and Stephen, the owners of Orangetheory River District, to learn more about how they achieved this major milestone of opening up their own studio!
How did you get started with Orangetheory?
Dave: I started working out at Orangetheory in 2015 and fell in love with the workout so much that I started looking into the business side of it. I’ve been in the sports marketing industry for over 25 years and have always loved the combination of sports and business. An opportunity came up to get involved, so I jumped on it!
Stephen: I also joined Orangetheory as a member in 2015 and loved it so much that I wanted to have a stake in my own studio or with a business partner. Before this, I spent more than 20 years in business, mostly in the automotive/transportation sector.
What do you love most about your work?
Dave: First off, I’ve been fortunate to work in the sports and entertainment businesses which I’m passionate about. However, I’ve also been lucky to work with great people, and that’s what you remember the most, so I look forward to helping to assemble a great team at our River District studio and connecting with our new members.
Stephen: I’ve been very fortunate to spend a lot of time working with and for great people. I enjoy the camaraderie that we’ve created and fostered with our team and soon to be members when we officially open the studio.
How did you decide on River District as a community for your studio?
Dave: We scouted many areas in East Vancouver for our studio, however, we just had a really good “feeling” about River District the moment we walked around the area. It felt vibrant, open and exciting and Wesgroup has been excellent to work with from the start.
Stephen: We did our homework on several markets in the Greater Vancouver Area and decided that the East Vancouver market had tremendous upside all over it. After making that decision, we then started dialing in areas that we felt had a great community feel with the upside of future growth. Needless to say, River District checked all the boxes and we are so excited to be part of the future of River District.
What’s been the most challenging aspect of bringing Orangetheory to River District?
Dave: There are so many challenging aspects to starting up a business but the biggest hurdle we’ve faced has been this little pandemic that’s been going on. We’re committed to providing our members and staff with a safe environment while we work our way through this challenging time though. Outside of that, its been finding a location for our studio and I’m optimistic that we’ve found a great spot in River District!
Stephen: I probably sound like a broken record but the timing of the global pandemic has been troubling for the world, us as owners, and the general public. We are very comfortable with other Orangetheory Fitness franchisees and the Orangetheory Fitness Canada office who have put excellent safety protocols in place in hopes of being part of the solution.
Outside of fitness, do you have any other hobbies or interests you’re passionate about?
Dave: Well I grew up in Vancouver, so I have a passion for playing hockey and watching our Canucks. I also love golf, so I try to get out to some of the fabulous courses that BC has to offer when I can.
Stephen: First and foremost, I’ve been blessed with a great support network at home who have traversed North America over the years for my career aspirations. Obviously, they are my passion as they supported me for so long. From a more personal level, I’m a sports junkie who loves to follow and attend any and all events that I can where I’m part of the electric atmosphere.
